Safety
USCA is concerned with safety on the water, and has a committee (see below) whose purpose is to promote safety through education and public relations. These web pages are part of that effort.
USCA's Safety Committee is chaired by Glen Green, whose contact details are:

In time, a collection of articles will be posted here for free download and distribution.
The first of these has been posted by request of Charles Amboy of Michigan who wrote:
"The article Lightning and Lightning Safety by Glen Green in Canoe News 43/2, Summer is the best I've seen. On July 15 about 60 of us paddlers in the Grand River Expedition 2010 encountered a terrific lightning storm on the river. Because this is still fresh in mind, I would like to be able to point our participants to this article. Could it be posted in Safety on your site?"
Charles: Thank you for the inspiration. More to come.

This is a great life jacket to wear if you are paddling on flatwater or Class I water during hot, humid weather since this life jacket does not trap the heat next to your body; plus being low-profile this PFD doesn'st interfere with your stroke technique when uninflated. Note: This life jacket is not the PFD of choice in certain situations — please see the manufacturer's notes below.
Manufacturer's Notes:
1. This PFD requires the manual pulling of a lanyard tab to inflate (does not automatically inflate when immersed).
2. Once inflated the air bladder must be pulled over your head & the straps connected.
3. Unsuitable for calm, inland water where there is a good chance of fast rescue.
4. Designed for adults weighing over 80 lbs with a chest size of 30—52''.
5. Not recommended for non-swimmers or weak swimmers.
6. Users of inflatable PFDs must be at least 16 years of age.
7. Do not use below freezing.
8. Inflatable PFDs do not meet the U.S. Coast Guard PFD carriage requirements unless the inflatable PFD is actually being worn.
