May 15, 2010 – 2nd Annual Russellville Barton Cup Qualifying Race, Russellville, AR. The 2nd annual Barton Cup Qualifying Race was held out at the Russellville Ski Area on May 15. We received a lot of rain the night before, which caused a significant amount of inflow from the Illinois Bayou, so we had to change the course from last year. This ended up being a bonus for the spectators since the course now looped around the ski area and allowed a full view of the race. It also provided a more challenging course for the competitors since there were now several sharp turns. The course did go out into part of the Illinois Bayou flow so there were a couple of swims, but the swimmers were able to get back into their canoes and finish the course. One of those juniors that participated in the unintentional swim portion of the race paddled hard enough to finish in third place. Great job to all those involved and good luck at Nationals.
