What is it?
The
Barton Challenge Program consists of regional races for young paddlers from 9 to 17 years old (see Note #1 below) culminating in the Barton Cup Challenge at the
USCA National Championships in early August every year.
How do you qualify to compete in the Barton Cup Finals at Nationals
By completing a course in a regional Qualifying Race, paddlers become eligible to compete at the following USCA Nationals for the Barton Cup final within the C1 Junior and K1 Junior Marathon Championship races.
Where and when are the USCA Nationals in 2010?
In 2010 National Canoe & Kayak Championships will take place on the Peshtigo River in Peshtigo, WI - about 40 minutes north of Green Bay, from Tuesday, August 10 through Sunday, August 15.
The K1 Junior Marathon Championships & K1 Barton Challenge finals take place Saturday, August 14. The C1 Junior Marathon Championships & C1 Barton Challenge finals take place Sunday, August 15. Winners of each of the four classes (C1/K1, Man/Woman) will receive a Barton Cup. The K1 winners will also win a kayak paddle, donated by Epic Kayaks. The C1 winners will also win a canoe paddle.
Note #1: Ages: For Barton Challenge Qualifying Races taking place in the 12 months leading to a USCA Nationals, ages are measured as of midnight on the December 31 preceding that Nationals. Example 1: For Qualifying Races taking place August 1, 2009 through July 31, 2010, ages are measured as of December 31, 2009. Example 2: For races taking place from August 1, 2010 through July 31, 2011, ages are measured as of December 31, 2010.
Note #2: The Barton Cup finals at USCA Nationals do not qualify as Barton Challenge Qualifying Races for the following year.

May 15, 2010 – 2nd Annual Russellville Barton Cup Qualifying Race, Russellville, AR.
The 2nd annual Barton Cup Qualifying Race was held out at the Russellville Ski Area on May 15. We received a lot of rain the night before, which caused a significant amount of inflow from the Illinois Bayou, so we had to change the course from last year. This ended up being a bonus for the spectators since the course now looped around the ski area and allowed a full view of the race. It also provided a more challenging course for the competitors since there were now several sharp turns. The course did go out into part of the Illinois Bayou flow so there were a couple of swims, but the swimmers were able to get back into their canoes and finish the course. One of those juniors that participated in the unintentional swim portion of the race paddled hard enough to finish in third place. Great job to all those involved and good luck at Nationals.
