The Greg Barton Cup Challenge for C1 and K1 Junior Marathon is a program of regional races for young paddlers from 9 to 17 years old (see Note #1 below) culminating in the Barton Cup Challenge finals at the USCA National Canoe & Kayak Championships in early August every year. How do I qualify to compete in the Barton Cup Challenge finals at USCA Nationals ? You qualify by being between 9 and 17 years of age on December 31, 2011, by being (or becoming) a member of USCA and completing a course in a regional Barton Cup Qualifying Race. This makes you elegible to compete at the following USCA Nationals in the Barton Cup Challenge finals, which are run as part of the C1 Junior and K1 Junior Marathon Championship races.   Where and when are the USCA Nationals in 2012? In 2012, USCA National Canoe & Kayak Championships will take place on the Allegheny River in Warren, PA from Tuesday, August 7 through Sunday, August 12.   The K1 Junior Marathon Championships & K1 Barton Cup Challenge finals take place - date tba. The C1 Junior Marathon Championships & C1 Barton Cup Challenge finals take place - date tba. Winners of each of the four classes (C1/K1, Man Junior/Woman Junior) will receive a Barton Cup trophy. The K1 winners will also win a kayak paddle, donated by Epic Kayaks. The C1 winners will also win a canoe paddle. How do I hold a Barton Cup Qualifying Race? Download and fill out the Application to Hold a Barton Cup Qualifying Race and send it, signed, to the Barton Cup Chair (or the Youth Activities Committee Chair). For USCA Sanctioning you'll need a course at least 3 miles long, and you'll need to meet certain insurance requirements, and be willing to collect participant information, signatures on waivers, and USCA memberships from those not already members — and send documents, information and race results to various parties in a timely fashion: all details are on the form. In return you'll get promotion from the USCA and the joy of encouraging kids in a healthy sport. Note #1: Ages: For Barton Cup Qualifying Races taking place in the 12 months leading to a USCA Nationals, ages are measured as of midnight on the December 31 preceding that Nationals.   Example 1: For Qualifying Races taking place August 15, 2011 through August 5, 2012, ages are measured as of December 31, 2011.   Example 2: For races taking place from August 13, 2012 through August 4, 2013, ages are measured as of December 31, 2012.
