What is Marathon Canoe Racing? -- It's long distance racing in canoes or kayaks with sit down style paddling, over distances that vary from 2 to 18 miles and sometimes to 200 + miles on lakes and rivers. The conditions may not exceed Class II (International Scale of River Difficulty.) The majority of races are from 5 to 20 + miles or not exceeding 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours in length and may include portages.

How Is Marathon Racing Different From Olympic Sprint Racing? - Olympic Sprint racers high-kneel on one knee in Olympic sports and usually race on straight courses of 500 to 1000 meters in length, and paddle a different type of boat. Marathon racers generally sit down while paddling and follow long courses with varied water conditions. Both sports use specialized canoes and kayaks, however, marathons also have classes for recreational canoes.

Are There Certain Rules Required In Racing? - Yes! USCA publishes Competition Rules and Canoe and Kayak Specifications. We also publish Sanctioned Race Sponsor Requirements. The Rule Book includes such requirements as specifications and method of measurement, limit controlling instability for cruising canoe, safety factors, listed events, race management and conduct, settling disputes, Arbitration Committee, and much more.

Is Marathon Canoe/Kayak Held In Every State? - No, but it's in a lot of places. Check here to view links in your state or region.

Who competes in these races? -Marathon racing is a participation sport for all ages. Intense training is required for national and international levels of competition. Canoeing and kayaking are two sports that rely mainly on the upper body. There is a "class" for you in canoe racing! Most races have separate male, female, and mixed classes. Classifications of competitors cover a wide range of age and experience levels.
